From the author: Based on a typical automotive assembly plant in today's environment, this analysis provides insight into the marginal cost curves facing industry. Because of employment guarantee provisions of the labor contract, the short-term marginal cost curve is not U-shaped, increasing, nor even convex. A consequence of this complicated shape is that there may be more than one point where marginal cost equals marginal revenue, thus requiring the firm to evaluate each such point to find its profit maximizing production level.
