Very helpful! August 26, 2010 NetZeroTn I would not have passed this test if it wasn't for this book, even though I had taken LAN classes in the past, the original study book I had was incomprehensible to me, exam cram made it so much easier and fun to pass on my first try! now I'm going for their security plus version. but yes do take some LAN classes before even sitting out the test.
Disappointing January 18, 2010 James T. Shroyer (Peoria, IL) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This book should only be used in conjunction with another text while studying for the Net+, if at all. I bought this as my main study guide, trusting the good reputation of Exam Cram, as most of their books are generally pretty solid. I read through this book, did the practice questions, and also ran through the test simulator (the CD does show up in only a couple of days if it isn't included). The day before I originally planned on taking the test I spent part of a day at Barnes and Noble and essentially used it as a library in order to get a different perspective on the material. I sat down with a few books and would go through their review questions, making note of any areas where I felt I struggled, and then reading the portion of the text that covered that particular subject. I am incredibly thankful that I did this because it lead to the discovery that the Exam Cram text had several important topics that were either left out completely or barely covered. I ended up buying a different book and spending an extra week studying it, and was amazed how it covered things that weren't even in the Exam Cram book, yet were absolutely on the Net+ exam. The reviews mentioning typos and poor editing are true as well, by the way. All in all, this book is only useful if you have a different book to use as your main study guide. In other words, if you want just one book that will adequately prepare you for the Net+ exam, this one is an absolute waste of money.
Excellent Prep for CompTIA Network + Exam January 13, 2010 Rick A. Boucher (Monument, Colorado USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I had a couple books at work to study for the exam and this one was, by far, the easiest to follow and study. I, also, found the exam tips and self-test questions very helpful.
I don't know why people complain about the book...I found it easy to read and very logical.
I have 20+ years experience with computers but only 2 with networks and the book assumes you are not brand-new in the network world. If you are, go to hardware stores and look over all the cables, routers, switches, and connectors you can and find a network expert and have them mentor you on difficult topics. (Like the OSI layers, router protocols, ports, etc.)
My only recommendations for future editions would be to add more on subnetting as the book does a poor job explaining it, imho.
I studied this book, cover to cover, a couple of times before taking the test and I scored an 865 on the COMPTIA Network + on the first try. (Lots of self-quizes on the WWW, go get some of those before you take the test and re-study weak areas.)
Good review material for exam October 11, 2009 Roger Morris (Fairbanks, Alaska) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Book is well written, though it does cover some material not necessary for the exam. It does highlight and shift focus to the required parts as well as lists tips for remembering specific aspects of the exam.
Overall, good purchase and would recommend it. For the most part, an easy read.
good book September 12, 2009 Kyle L. Wheeler SERIOUSLY this book did help, BUT KNOW WHAT TO STUDY BEFORE YOU TAKE THE TEST and this book helps. And has the new objectives in it as well.
