Product Description
Revised and completely updated for the 2008 National Electric Code, this small manual continues its 75-year history of demonstrating how to install safe, convenient, and economical wiring. Encouraging readers to tackle jobs small and large, the guide covers everything from repairing a table lamp to wiring a whole house. After introducing the basics—standards, codes, safety practices, and an overview of how electricity is measured and delivered—chapters show how to design a layout for lights, switches, and receptacles; run a line from a utility pole; install wires, circuits, and grounds; and handle special projects such as replacing old wiring and wiring detached garages and accessory buildings.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for the homeowner that is upgrading or adding!   August 29, 2010
Mike
Book is very well layed out and full of tons of information that you MUST have when wiring your home, garage etc. This is the book to goto when you have questions or want to learn something new. Buy this book before you make decision on what all you need for the job. There are expensive and affordable routes to take when buying the supplies to do your project. Both are completely legal and safe. For example: Plastic molded duplexes are cheaper than metal ones and you dont have to mess with grounding a plastic duplex! I went with the more rigid fiberglass since the plastic is a little too flimsy for my install. GET IT! You wont regret the book! It will save you time and lots of MONEY!

THE BEST HANDS-ON, HOW-TO WIRING BOOK FOR THE LAYMAN AND TRADESMAN
I've owned and used and loaned and lost various editions since the 60's, both in my home and on the job as a carpenter/stagehand. It's Indispensable for the once-in-a-while electrician or homeowner whether he/she is adding a single outlet or upgrading a new kitchen. Working with this book will give you confidence in the safety, utility, and re-salability of your project. Nothing extraneous, excellent index, gender friendly. No condescension.
The illustrations are the best in the business, and there are an awful lot of fancy wiring books to choose from. The precise (and time honored) diagrams and carefully edited text provide the reader with the information needed to do a good, safe, and efficient job.

5 out of 5 stars Safety, code, and understandable   April 15, 2010

Used this and previous editions for 40 years, on 4 houses & several rentals, from repairs to complete rewiring to new construction. For the homeowner, clear and mostly simple. When you wire to code, it's safer and keeps the banks and insurance companies and inspectors and appraisers off your back. That also pays off when you go to sell. Just keep to the newest addition. If you are doing more than just replacing a broken plug, it sure beats anything like the "Time-Life" handyman-type series; more authoritative & comprehensive than most others you can buy at local big-box hardware/builder supply yards. Just don't think it makes you an electrician, never do someone else's house, and follow ALL safety rules. It is wise to check your state & local laws too - to see if you are allowed to work on your own property, and see if there are local additions/variations on code. Some building officials will work with you, some won't.
