Great material, fresh format May 7, 2010 Jason T. Masker (Michigan USA) I am a current CCNP who has made regular use of the Cisco Press Certification Guide Series to pass Cisco Exams. Recently, Cisco revamped the certification path for its CCNP certification. This guide is the first for the new TSHOOT exam.
Although the certification path I followed for CCNP did not include the TSHOOT exam, I recognized most of the actual material from the older BSCI & BCMSN tests. However, the presentation of this material has changed dramatically. Where the older material typically required you to know several show commands and the output they produce, the new material focuses on problems that may occur and the effective use of show commands to isolate the problem and identify what needs to be corrected. This is typically quite a bit trickier than simply memorizing the show commands and you will find this guide a welcome help in preparing for examination.
One feature I really liked was the inclusion of "trouble ticket" sections in many of the chapters where you are presented with a trouble ticket, given some show command output and asked to identify the problem. The trouble tickets are a useful exercise and help bridge the gap between book knowledge and what you might encounter in real life. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on creating baselines and the author does a good job of showing how useful these baselines are during later troubleshooting efforts.
The software included with the book was a disappointment. Boson has a great reputation for NetSim, their Cisco network simulator, but I did not find any simulated scenarios on the CD. On the CDs from my older CCNP certification guides they would usually include one or two simulation exercises. This material contained only multiple choice, multiple answer and drag & drop style questions were presented. I felt this was a missed opportunity especially because the TSHOOT material is more suited for the scenario style questions than for multiple choice questions. One redeeming point is that I was able to register the exam to my account on [...] and this makes the process of retrieving previously registered exams on a new computer relatively easy.
Overall, the CCNP TSHOOT Certification Guide is an advisable investment for anyone seeking to take the exam, delivering the same quality material we have all come to expect of Cisco Press exam preparation materials. The guide is also a good resource if you are looking to augment your troubleshooting skills or check how your existing knowledge stands up to the new exam format.
Must Have for any NOC Engineer April 28, 2010 Manish Chaurasia (Atlanta, GA) I wish I had this book a few years before when I was doing lot of network troubleshooting very good stuff
just perfect for whats needed for any troubleshooting Day from routing, switching, IP services, Network Maintanance, security, IP communication, and IPV6 also provides a good starting point and a line of thinking to start troubleshooting.
Now I am using this to prepare for the CCIE R/S Troubleshooting section and happy with the content coverage.
was waiting for this kind of book since long time.
precious for certification April 6, 2010 Mastrominico Michele (italy) the tshoot is revised version of the old CIT exam, with updated subjects to reflect the fast changing technology's issues. this book will surely help to persue the ccnp
Antoher good Cisco Press book April 4, 2010 Martin (Los Angeles CA) CCNT Tshoot Official Certification Guide is a well written and easy to understand book. The book's goal is to help the readers pass the Cisco CCNP TSHOOT exam (642-832) which will replace both CCNP ISCW and ONT exams that will expire on July 31, 2010.
Almost each chapter starts with the "Do I know this a;ready" quiz, followed by the introduction of the foundation topics that includes trouble tickets or case studies where readers are provided with baseline configurations and solutions, and finished with key topics review and command reference.
Most network administrator can skip the first three chapters of the book that mostly discuss the basic network maintenance and troubleshooting process. The next 5 chapters talk about Cisco switching and routing protocol troubleshooting. Since this is a troubleshooting book, it will not explain the switching and routing protocol concepts in details. It only explains the concept briefly in several pages and ends the explanation with troubleshooting commands such as the show and debug commands, before going to case studies.
The next chapters talks about Cisco IOS security, NAT and DHCP, some basic IP Telephony and video concepts, IPv6 and advanced services troubleshooting such as Netflow, IP SLAs, Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR) and Quality of Services(Qos) The final 2 chapters discuss the VPN troubleshooting and the final preparation advices for taking the exam.
The author did a good job to provide many case studies so readers can understand how to troubleshoot the problems. However, with only 500 pages, the book can not provide all the possible scenarios for all these topics. For example, the book only provides a case study for routing protocol redistribution problem for a network with EIGRP and OSPF routing protocol. It does not showcase any redistribution problem for RIP, OSPF and EIGRP together.
The case studies provided are not really that complex, which might give readers a wrong perception that switching and routing troubleshooting is easy. In addition, almost all of the scenarios provided come with the same network diagram with some minor changes here and there. It was probably done on purpose so readers become familiar with the given network example without re-learning them.
This book is relatively easy to read and understand for readers who are very familiar with Cisco switching and routing concepts. I recommend beginners who are not familiar with Cisco switching and routing to read David Hucaby's Cisco LAN Switching Configuration Handbook (ISBN#978-1587056109) and Jeff Doyle's Routing TCP/IP Volume 1 (ISBN#978-1587052026) and Routing TCP/IP Volume 2 (ISBN#978-1578700899)
As mentioned earlier, this is not a comprehensive troubleshooting reference book. The book's intention is to prepare students for CCNP TShoot exam. Therefore, I still recommend readers to get a hands-on lab experience using the real equipment or Dynamips IOS emulation to better understand the switching and routing concepts.
I recommend this book without hesitation. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Although the book will help the readers pass the exam, I still recommend the readers not to take the exam without spending many hours in the lab.
Must have for exam and day-to-day use March 29, 2010 Michael Burley (USA) I have just completed both reading this book, "CCNP 642-832 Official Certification Guide" , and taking the TSHOOT Beta exam and I have to say this book was a great help for this exam. The book was written in a way that made understanding the subject matter very easy. It was direct and to the point and that made reading it very easy. Not only is this a must have for your studying for the exam but is also something you can use in your day-to-day troubleshooting, and I already have. I would highly recommend this book, great investment.
